Do you want a perfect smile? If you are experiencing any form of malocclusion (misalignment of teeth) then you are in need of a Katy Orthodontist. There are two types of instances, the majority of the first type of malocclusion are usually inherited such as crowding, spacing, missing teeth etc. The other is acquired through either through thumb or finger sucking, tongue thrusting, and/or other various issues leading to malocclusion. Having regular check-ups and good dental health can help ease with some of these problems.

Here are a few instances where orthodontic work is required:

  • Teeth crowding
  • Excess space between teeth
  • Jaw growth problems
  • Protruding teeth
  • Uneven bites

Leaving dental care untreated can result in tooth decay, diseased gums, joint problems and ultimately a loss of teeth. In most cases, unattended malocclusion is far more expensive than orthodontic care.

Orthodontics can help improve most problems associated with malocclusions. It is best advised to get treatment as soon as possible, keeping in mind every patient will vary depending on age. Your visit will consist of evaluating optimum time for treatment, effectiveness in moving misaligned teeth, the time required and overall cost. Consult Dr. James D. Long of Katy, TX today for a complimentary exam that will help determine the best treatment plan for you.

 The Many “Faces” of Orthodontics

Beautiful straight teeth aren’t just for kids anymore!  Today, orthodontic treatment is simple and convenient for people of all ages! New techniques and appliances greatly reduce discomfort, number of visits for adjustments and actually can shorten the total treatment time for both children and adults. State of the art appliances and treatments are now available, from clear and tooth colored brackets, to NASA type wires that require fewer adjustments.  Some patients prefer Invisalign, a revolutionary way to straighten teeth using clear aligners that require no braces or wires!  With all of the advancements in Orthodontics, wearing braces has never been easier!

Dr. Long has been providing comprehensive orthodontic care for his patients for over 15 years. We offer Traditional Brackets, Interceptive Therapy and Invisalign for our patients.  Each individual’s orthodontic condition requires a comprehensive evaluation and “case specific” plan.  Dr. Long likes to evaluate children as young as 3 years of age, while the child is in the “growth” phase.  Early orthodontic therapy can dramatically reduce the amount of time and expense of future treatment.

What are the BENEFITS of Orthodontics?

  1.  Gives you a more beautiful smile! Straight teeth and a nice smile improve self esteem and helps create a healthier you!
  2. Improves facial shape and profile.
  3. Improves chewing function.
  4. Improves your ability to clean more effectively.  Crowded teeth are more difficult to clean which may contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.
  5. Prevents excessive tooth wear. Protruding teeth are more susceptible to chipping.
  6. Cross Bites can result in unfavorable jaw growth and damaging tooth wear.
  7. Freedom from jaw and joint pain.
  8. Open Bites can result in tongue thrusting habits and speech impediments.
  9. Reduces mouth breathing.
  10. Establishes a healthier foundation for the replacement of missing teeth or other restorative dental work.

What are the BENEFITS of Interceptive Orthodontic Therapy for younger children?

  1. Creates room for crowded erupting permanent teeth.
  2. Creates facial symmetry by influencing proper jaw growth.
  3. Reduced risk of trauma to protruding front teeth.
  4. Preserves space for un-erupted permanent teeth.
  5. Reduces the need for extraction of permanent teeth.
  6. Reduces the future treatment time.

Invisalign orthodontics uses a progressive series of individually designed clear plastic trays or aligners to gently straighten imperfect smiles.  They look very natural, no wires or brackets.  A few of the many benefits are that they are clear and not noticeable, there are no eating restrictions, and they allow you to thoroughly clean your teeth. The average treatment time is 9 to 12 months, once again, depending on each individual case.  We also offer a “mini” Invisalign régime for people who previously had orthodontics and experienced a bit of “relapse”.  This “mini” course of treatment is perfect to restore that “post braces” perfect smile!

Traditional orthodontics, with brackets and arch wire, is the most popular solution to straighten teeth.  It can treat a wide variety of orthodontic problems including:   Misalignment, Crowding, Spaces and gaps between the teeth, Under-bites, Over-bites, Over-jets (buck looking teeth), and Cross-bites. Dr. Long offers clear and white brackets for adult patients that don’t want the traditional stainless.  The length of treatment varies from patient to patient, depending on each individual’s condition, usually 9 to 18 months.
